The need to prepare is all too real!
Disasters disrupt hundreds of thousands of lives every year and can strike at anytime and anywhere without warning, forcing you and your loved ones to go days to weeks without the basic necessities of everyday life. In some cases, many are forced to evacuate their homes and belongings. If a disaster arises in your community, disaster-relief organizations and local agencies will try to assist you, however you should be ready as well. Emergency relief aid may not be immediately available or able to reach you in a timely manner, or may have to respond and focus their support elsewhere. Each disaster can have long-lasting effects, both to people and property.
Depending on your area, disasters can range from any one or a multiple of the below:
• Earthquakes
• Tornadoes
• Floods
• Fires
• Wildfires
• Hurricanes
• Thunderstorms and lightning
• Winter storms and extreme cold
• Extreme heat
• Volcanoes
• Tsunamis
• Landslides
There are many reasons you need to be prepared. Identifying and knowing the steps to take during a disaster can greatly reduce the distress and danger you and your family may face. You need to first identify the possible disasters that can arise in your area, and then make a plan for those disasters to include recovery steps. Contact the American Red Cross chapter in your area (https://www.redcross.org/) or your local emergency management office (https://www.fema.gov/emergency-management-agencies) to learn what disasters can strike your area.
